Why Winter is the Best Time to Begin Laser Hair Removal Treatment
As winter nears, snow begins to fall, and you start bundling up in coats, scarves, and sweaters. That’s just one of the reasons that now is the ideal time to start laser hair removal treatment.
At All Island Dermatology, with offices in Garden City and Glen Cove, New York, our board-certified providers also remind clients that starting laser hair removal sessions in late fall or winter ensures you’ll enjoy your sleek new look by summer.
Whether you’re looking to get rid of unwanted hair on your legs, underarms, bikini area, chest, back, or elsewhere, here are other benefits of starting now.
Best on untanned skin
Laser hair removal works best on pale, untanned skin. If you have it done in the summer while you have a tan, you may need more treatment sessions than you would in the winter.
And because sensitivity increases temporarily in skin that’s undergone laser treatment, we advise you to avoid exposing treated skin to sunlight for several weeks afterward.
Of course, you’re best not tanning at all. Research has linked both indoor and outdoor tanning to skin cancer, so slather on that sunscreen whenever you expose your skin.
No waxing allowed
For ideal results, we ask that you avoid hair removal by waxing, plucking, or electrolysis for 4 weeks before receiving laser treatments. (Shaving and trimming are okay, however). That’s another reason to have laser hair removal in the coldest months. Both our male and female clients find it much easier to skip their usual waxing routine in the winter, when they’re covered up in clothing.
Best on darker hair
Laser hair removal works best on dark hair because the laser targets the pigment in your hair. If you have dark hair that’s bleached by the sun or hair coloring products, we recommend allowing your hair to return to its natural color before receiving a laser hair removal treatment. Some find this easier to do in winter.
Several sessions needed
Most clients require several laser hair removal sessions spaced weeks apart. Plan ahead, and you won’t lose any beach time to laser treatments. Everyone is different, but on average, optimal results require 6 to 12 sessions, scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart.
Reasons our clients love laser hair removal
Not having to worry about removing unwanted hair daily is paramount. Plus, laser hair removal is easy, safe, and virtually painless.
During laser hair removal, we use a device that delivers short pulses of laser-generated heat through your skin and into your hair follicles. The pigments in your hair follicles absorb the laser energy, which inactivates hair follicles and makes them unable to produce hair.
